Background of the Study
Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has prioritized urban development and transportation reforms, including the improvement of public transportation systems in Abuja and its surrounding areas, such as Gwagwalada. Effective public transportation systems are essential for improving urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and enhancing economic activities. During his tenure as the FCT Minister, Wike has focused on improving the quality, accessibility, and affordability of public transportation services, especially in peri-urban districts like Gwagwalada.

The challenges in Gwagwalada include a lack of reliable and affordable public transport options, leading to over-dependence on informal transport services that are often inefficient and unreliable. Wike’s policies aim to address these challenges by introducing modernized public transportation systems, including the introduction of new bus fleets, the expansion of transport routes, and the establishment of transportation hubs. This study will examine the impact of these public transportation initiatives on mobility, economic activities, and residents’ quality of life in Gwagwalada.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the efforts to improve public transportation in Gwagwalada, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and resistance to new transport policies persist. This study seeks to evaluate whether Wike’s public transportation initiatives have been successful in addressing the mobility needs of residents, improving transportation efficiency, and contributing to economic development in Gwagwalada.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of Nyesom Wike’s public transportation initiatives on mobility and accessibility in Gwagwalada.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the new transportation systems in improving economic activities and reducing congestion in Gwagwalada.

  3. To identify the challenges and successes in implementing public transportation reforms in Gwagwalada.

Research Questions

  1. How have Nyesom Wike’s public transportation initiatives impacted mobility in Gwagwalada?

  2. What effect have these initiatives had on economic activities and congestion in Gwagwalada?

  3. What challenges have been encountered in implementing public transportation reforms in Gwagwalada?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nyesom Wike’s public transportation initiatives have improved mobility and accessibility in Gwagwalada.

  2. The transportation reforms have reduced traffic congestion and improved economic activities in Gwagwalada.

  3. Challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and resistance to new policies have hindered the full implementation of public transportation reforms in Gwagwalada.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on evaluating the public transportation initiatives introduced by Nyesom Wike in Gwagwalada, FCT. It will assess the impact of these policies on mobility, congestion, and local economic activities. The scope is limited to Gwagwalada and will not address transportation initiatives in other parts of the FCT. Data availability and the assessment of informal transport services may pose limitations.
